‘A Minecraft Movie’ Digs Up Massive Opening Weekend Despite Mixed Reviews

A Minecraft Movie finally hit theaters worldwide this weekend — and it’s already breaking box office records. Released globally across 75 international markets, the film is expected to collect $260 M+ in its opening weekend, including $52.7 M overseas and a strong domestic debut of $58 M on Friday alone.

This early momentum places Minecraft among the biggest openings of 2025 so far, proving that audiences love for video game adaptations—even when the critical response is pretty bad.

Critics Are… Not Digging It

While the audience is loving it, critics have been far less enthusiastic. It currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 49%, with many reviewers calling the plot thin and the humor hit-or-miss. One critic described it as “a chaotic mashup of pixels and punchlines,” while others admitted the visuals and action might be enough to win over younger fans.

Still, the audience score is 87%. Moviegoers, especially families and longtime Minecraft players, seem to be enjoying the ride for what it is — a colorful, fast-paced adventure that brings the blocky world to life.

The movie stars Jason Momoa in the lead and Jack Black, who adds his usual fun and energy to the screen. The cast also includes Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.

It is directed by Jared Hess. The script was written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, who took on the tough job of turning the open-world game into a movie with a real story. While the plot has some ups and downs, the movie is overall good.

A Minecraft Movie is now playing in theaters and IMAX near you.
