Amazon has officially ordered two seasons of its God of War tv series, but the project is already facing challenges. Fans expressed frustration after new showrunner Ronald D. Moore stated he is “not a gamer,” raising questions about his understanding of the franchise’s complexity.
Amazon first announced the God of War adaptation in 2022, intending to revive the famous PlayStation franchise. However, the project has already undergone significant changes. Late last year, Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios announced that the adaptation had been revamped after former showrunner Rafe Judkins quit owing to creative disputes. Judkins had already written multiple episodes, but the studios chose to steer the series in a new way. Moore has stepped in to take leadership, but his recent words have not reassured followers.
Why Fans Are Concerned ?
God of War is one of PlayStation’s most famous franchises, celebrated for its deep storytelling and emotionally complex characters. The 2018 reboot and sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, elevated the series to new heights, transforming Kratos’ journey through Norse mythology into one of gaming’s most spectacular experiences.
Fans fear that having a showrunner who isn’t familiar with the source material could lead to a lackluster adaptation, especially since other video game-based series, like HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout, have succeeded by respecting their respective games.
Those adaptations had creative teams deeply connected to the source material—something that God of War may be missing.
Moore showed his ability to write gripping sci-fi and fantasy stories with TV series like Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind. Fans are concerned that the show might overlook what makes Kratos’ journey so potent if viewers don’t have a thorough understanding of God of War.
What Is The Series About?
It will most likely be an adaptation of the 2018 God of War game, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye, from the highest peak in the land. Along the way, Kratos is forced to confront his past as well as new enemies from Norse mythology.
