Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn, and Kitana

Fans of the Mortal Kombat series at last have a first look at Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in the forthcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film. Along with Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana, Martyn Ford’s Shao Kahn, and Hiroyuki Sanada returning as Scorpion, Entertainment Weekly has published exclusive photos highlighting Urban’s interpretation of the fan-favorite Hollywood action star.

Fans have been eager to see how Karl Urban would bring the character to life, and co-creator Ed Boon has teased that his introduction in the film will be “ridiculously hilarious.” The movie will explore Cage’s journey as a washed-up actor suddenly thrown into the brutal world of Mortal Kombat. Director Simon McQuoid emphasized the challenge of balancing Johnny’s comedic side while keeping him grounded, ensuring the character doesn’t become too over-the-top or goofy.

He is best known for his role as Billy Butcher in The Boys, portrays a character who is rough and gritty in the series. However, when it comes to Johnny Cage, it’s the complete opposite. Cage is an egotistical Hollywood star who unexpectedly finds himself in the world of Mortal Kombat, joining Liu Kang and Raiden.

It will introduce a number of significant characters from the Mortal Kombat universe in addition to Johnny Cage. Adeline Rudolph’s live-action debut as Kitana gives the narrative an additional level of intrigue. Martyn Ford’s portrayal of Shao Kahn promises to bring the ruthless villain to life in a way that fans have been waiting for. The film will also feature Damon Herriman as the sorcerer Quan Chi, Tati Gabrielle as the fierce warrior Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.

One of the biggest surprises is the return of characters who were previously killed off. Josh Lawson is back as Kano, and Max Huang returns as Kung Lao, despite their deaths in the first movie.

The second installment will focus more on the actual Mortal Kombat tournament, where Earth’s strongest fighters will face off against Shang Tsung and his forces in a battle to protect their realm from destruction. The film is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
