HBO has finally unveiled the first chilling trailer for Welcome to Derry, the highly anticipated prequel series to the IT films. Set in the eerie town of Derry, Maine during the 1960s, the show promises to explore the origins of one of horror’s most iconic villains and yes, Bill Skarsgård is officially returning as the clown.
The trailer wastes no time in establishing a mood of dread. Balloons appear in strange places, children vanish without a trace, and something dark is clearly lurking beneath the surface. Derry, as always, is hiding sinister secrets. Watch the trailer below.
Welcome to Derry introduces a new cast of characters, including a family moving to town in search of a fresh start. But as they settle in, they find themselves caught in a web of darkness tied to the town’s long history of horror. The show also dives into deeper parts of Stephen King’s IT mythology particularly the story of the Black Spot, a tragic, racially charged event from the book that reveals just how far back Pennywise’s terror stretches.
Andy Muschietti director of the two IT blockbusters returns as executive producer, alongside his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. The cast includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, and Madeleine Stowe.
And yes Skarsgård’s return as Pennywise is what has fans talking the most. Many thought his haunting performance ended with IT Chapter Two, but the trailer confirms that the nightmare is far from over.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Andy and Barbara Muschietti shared their excitement about returning to King’s world. “This is a book we love a lot, and we felt that there was still a lot of story to be covered,” said Andy. Barbara added, “We thought we would do justice to the book and the fans by going back into this world. Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes—writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation, which includes interviews he conducts with the older people in the town.”
Barbara also noted that while themes like friendship and loss return, the series will shine a spotlight on fear as a weapon something they feel is especially relevant in today’s world.
The full cast features several new and recurring faces, including Stephen Rider, Dean Yool, Alixandra Fuchs, Kimberly Norris Guerrero, Tyner Rushing, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, Morningstar Angeline, and Rudy Mancuso.
Welcome to Derry is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television and is based on Stephen King’s novel IT. The series was developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will serve as co-showrunners, with Fuchs also penning the first episode’s screenplay. Andy Muschietti will direct four out of the nine episodes.
The series will premiere in Fall 2025 on HBO and will be available for streaming on Max.
