Ryan Coogler Confirms No Plans for a 'Sinners' Sequel

Ryan Coogler is stepping away from the franchise mindset at least for now.

Following the buzz around his latest film, Sinners, the acclaimed Ryan Coogler has made it clear he doesn’t intend to turn it into a series or franchise. In a recent interview, Coogler clarified that he approached Sinners as a standalone story, with no plans for a sequel.

I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit,” Coogler said, reflecting on his work on the Black Panther films and other big Marvel projects. “So I wanted to get away from that. I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal.”

That sense of creative freedom shows in Sinners, which dives into complex characters and morally gray themes, all wrapped in a bold, original narrative. Unlike many recent releases that seem built to launch a universe, Coogler’s latest film has a clear beginning, middle, and end with no cliffhangers or teases for a part two.

Fans have praised Sinners for being self-contained, something that’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s film landscape. And while some might be hoping for more from the world he built, Coogler seems content with telling a complete story and then moving on.

For now, he is focused on exploring new territory, and not focusing on sequels or spin-offs. Whether or not Sinners stays a standalone project forever, Coogler’s decision is a refreshing reminder that not every great film needs to be a franchise.

When will ‘Sinners’ be available to stream?

Sinners” will be available for buy and rent on digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home on June 3.
