History Made: Michael Becomes the Highest-Grossing Movie of 2026 Worldwide

Yes, you read it right. Michael has become the highest-grossing movie of the year. It has now earned $1.025 billion at the global box office, surpassing Super Mario Galaxy to claim the #1 spot worldwide.

It became the first biopic to do such a thing. Oppenheimer came close to achieving one billion, but it only reached $976.8 million at the box office. Michael was released on April 24, 2026. The film remained in theaters long enough to cross the $1 billion mark after 12 weekends. While critics bashed the movie, saying it has no complete story, the general audience loved the movie, as it was like a live concert from Michael Jackson himself, and they highly praised Jaafar’s performance in the movie.

Jaafar is the nephew of the late Michael Jackson, and he played his uncle in the movie.

The film follows Michael Jackson’s life from his early years with the Jackson 5 through his rise to global superstardom, covering the Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad eras.

When Will Michael Sequel Be Released?

Following the success of the movie, Lionsgate has confirmed that a sequel is in development, and in fact, 25–30% of the sequel has already been filmed using previously shot footage. The first film concluded during the Bad World Tour, leaving some of the most significant chapters of Jackson’s life and music still to be told.

Michael is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan. It stars Jaafar Jackson, and, as a child, Juliano Valdi, both in their film debuts. Other cast includes Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

If you wish to watch Michael digitally, it is available on Prime Video and Apple TV.
