When Godzilla Minus One was released in 2023, it became one of the biggest Japanese international feature films to receive a global theatrical release and a box office success. But now, while we await the release of Godzilla Minus Zero, the film’s director, Takashi Yamazaki, is already getting ready for another project.

Well, according to Deadline, his new feature film will be Grandgear, a sci-fi action movie starring Paul Giamatti, Nico Parker, and Sam Nivola. The film will be similar in style to Pacific Rim, which was released in 2013.

CinemaCon attendees have already seen some footage from the movie. The preview featured a giant robot battling a kaiju, a massive monster similar to those seen in the Godzilla movies. The footage also had a ground-level perspective reminiscent of Cloverfield.
Yamazaki will direct the film from an original screenplay he wrote himself. J.J. Abrams, through Bad Robot, will produce the movie alongside Glen Zipper. The project marks Yamazaki’s next major film following his work on the Godzilla franchise.
Grandgear will hit theaters on January 14, 2028.
