Never, ever, in the history of Marvel, particularly in the MCU, has something like this happened. On July 20, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige introduced Mahershala Ali as the next Blade. It has been almost 7 years now since the announcement was made. They couldn’t find a proper director, and Ali wasn’t happy with the script. The bottom line is that the Blade movie never took off.
The only brief appearance came in Eternals’ second post-credits scene, where Blade’s voice is heard speaking to Dane Whitman. Apart from that, there was no sign of Blade, other than Wesley Snipes appearing as the OG Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Now, while talking to GQ magazine, Mahershala Ali made it clear he’s moved on from the role. He explained that he was under contract, and if Marvel had wanted to make the movie, it would have happened. Since it didn’t, he said, that’s a question for Marvel to answer, not him.
“I have moved on … I’m good … you had me under contract … if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie … They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question”
Recently, while promoting Avengers: Doomsday, Kevin Feige also addressed the situation. He admitted he feels like a “gigantic loser and failure” over not getting the project off the ground with Mahershala Ali.
So finally, we won’t be seeing Mahershala Ali as Blade in the MCU. Marvel may be recasting the role, as they’re now focused on the Mutant Saga and Cosmic Saga. They’ll eventually need to cast Blade for the Midnight Sons, where he comes together with Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Wong, Moon Knight, and Doctor Voodoo.
