Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom was one of the most shocking casting decisions in the history of cinema. But is it really just for two movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars? Well, Doctor Doom wasn’t Marvel’s first choice as the main villain of the Multiverse Saga. That role originally belonged to Kang the Conqueror until Marvel changed its plans.
Now, Kevin Feige has stated that Marvel will follow elements of the Secret Wars comic storyline, where Doctor Doom survives at the end because Reed Richards forgives him. After his defeat and the destruction of Battleworld, Doom isn’t killed or imprisoned forever. Instead, Reed Richards forgives him and gives him a second chance, allowing him to return home to Latveria.
If Marvel follows that storyline, we could see Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom continue beyond Avengers: Secret Wars. With Tony Stark gone in the MCU, Marvel could adapt the story by having Victor Von Doom take on a similar role. If that’s the plan, Secret Wars won’t be the end of RDJ’s Doctor Doom. It could be the beginning of Infamous Iron Man. In the comics, Victor later creates a suit that combines Doom’s armor with Iron Man’s technology, becoming the Infamous Iron Man.
As Marvel moves on from the Multiverse Saga into the Mutant Saga and the Cosmic Saga, Doctor Doom’s presence in the MCU could become more important than ever.
Avengers: Secret Wars will release in theaters on December 17, 2027.
